Scaphium scaphigerum is a tree species in the family Malvaceae, subfamily Sterculioideae (previously placed in the Sterculiaceae). The species is endemic to mainland Southeast Asia, and no subspecies are recognized in the Catalogue of Life. Scaphium affine has culinary and traditional medicinal uses. In English, it is known as malva nut tree, or sometimes “Taiwan sweet gum tree”, although these names also apply to the similar Scaphium macropodum
In traditional medicine, especially Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, the seeds of this species and its close relative, S. macropodum, are used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, to soothe the throat, and as a “coolant”. As a result, it is a popular non-timber forest product in Laos, where it is the country’s second-largest export crop after coffee. Sterculinine, a bio-active alkaloid, is found in this species
According to Chinese medicine, the use of “Pang Da Hai” can remove heat from the lung, cure sore throats, counteract toxicity, and moisten the bowels. Specific symptoms treated include: hoarseness of voice, dry cough or productive cough with yellow sticky sputum, sore, dry throat due to heat in the lung and constipation with headache and bloodshot eyes. Consume malva nut by adding one or two nuts to a large cup of boiling water and consume the liquid. Typically, in traditional Chinese medicine, malva nut would be part of a larger formula of herbs designed to address a person’s condition
درخت آجیل ختمی یک درخت از خانواده پنیرکیان یا خانواده ختمی است که می‌تواند به ارتفاع 20 تا 30 متر رشد کند. درخت دارای برگ های ساده است که اندازه بزرگی دارند و به طول و عرض 20 تا 30 سانتی متر می‌باشند. این درخت در اواسط تابستان خوشه گل های بزرگ تولید می‌کند، گل ها بسیار زیبا می‌باشد. این درخت نسبت به هرس سنگین مقاوم است به همین دلیل یک درخت مناسب برای درست کردن بونسای می‌باشد. این درخت به آفتاب کامل، خاک قلیایی با زهکشی خوب نیاز دارد. خاک های لومی یا شنی برای کاشت این درخت مناسب هستند. درخت در برابر خشکسالی مقاوم است ولی بهتر است به طور منظم به آن آب داد و خاک را مرطوب نگه داشت. این درخت معمولا به کود نیاز ندارد و یک گیاه مقاوم می‌باشد.
دانه های این درخت در طب سنتی چین برای درمان گلو درد و سرماخوردگی و گرفتگی صدا مصرف میشود
کاشت بذر: قبل از کاشت بذرها را به مدت 24 ساعت در آب بخیسانید. یک گلدان کوچک را با یک خاک پر کنید، سپس بذر را به عمق چند میلی متر در خاک بکارید. خاک را مرطوب نگه دارید. دمای مناسب برای جوانه زنی 25 تا 30 درجه سانتی گراد می‌باشد. گلدان را در کنار پنجره قرار دهید. بهتر است گیاه در سال اول در خانه نگه داشته شود تا بتوان از آن در برابر سرمای زمستان محافظت نمود.
