Helianthus annuus, the sunflower, is a large annual forb of the genus Helianthus grown as a crop for its edible oil and edible fruits. This sunflower species is also used as wild bird food, as livestock forage (as a meal or a silage plant), in some industrial applications, and as an ornamental in domestic gardens. The plant was first domesticated in the Americas. Wild Helianthus annuus is a widely branched annual plant with many flower heads. The domestic sunflower, however, often possesses only a single large inflorescence (flower head) atop an unbranched stem. The name sunflower may derive from the flower’s head’s shape, which resembles the sun.
نژاد تخمه سیاه آفتابگردان گونه ای با تخمه های درشت و سیاه مناسب برای آجیل یا روغن گیری است.
گیاه این گونه معمولا یک یا چند گل بسیار درشت میکند که هر گل ممکن است چند کیلو گرم وزن داشته باشد.
گل آفتابگردان یا گل آذریون (عربی‌شدهٔ آذرگون) نام یک گونه از سردهٔ آفتابگردان است. گل آفتابگردان گیاهی است یک ساله و تا حدود سه متر رشد میکند. گل آن درشت و زیبا و به قطر ۳۵ سانتیمتر می‌باشد. در وسط گل زرد رنگ آن دایره‌ای قهوه‌ای رنگ وجود دارد که تخم‌های آفتابگردان دورادور آن را گرفته‌اند. از تخم آفتابگردان روغن گرفته می‌شود که اشباع نشده‌است و برای پخت‌وپز مناسب است.
