Scaevola taccada, also known as beach cabbage, sea lettuce, or beach naupaka, is a flowering plant in the family Goodeniaceae found in coastal locations in the tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific. It is a common beach shrub throughout the Arabian Sea, the tropical Indian Ocean and the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean
In some islands of the Pacific, Scaevola taccada is used to prevent coastal erosion as well as for landscaping. It is also planted on the beach crests to protect other cultivated plants from the salt spray. Parts of the plant are also used in Polynesian and Asian traditional medicine. Drops from the plant were used in cases of eye irritation by Chamorro breath-hold spearfishermen in the Mariana Islands. Historically in the Maldives the leaves of this plant were often used as famine food
درخت کلم ساحلی گونه ای درختی از خانواده پنجه بازان است
این درخت را بیشتر در شن های ساحل میکارند تا شدت موج های دریا و فرسایش خاک آنرا کم کند و ساحل را نیز سر سبز کند
گرچه قابل کاشت در خاک معمولی شهری نیز است. این گیاه به شوری آب دریا مقاوم است ولی در آب معمولی شهری نیز رشد میکند
قسمت های گیاه در طب سنتی آسیای شرقی کاربرد دارویی دارد
عصاره گیاه برای التهابات چشمی کاربرد دارد
همچنین برگهای گیاه خوراکی هستند ولی طعم خوبی ندارند و در زمان قحطی در مالدیو مردم برگهای این گیاه را میخوردند
