The bark is pale brown or grayish, smooth or finely fissured and flaking, armed with long straight spines, 1.2–2.5 centimetres (1⁄2–1 inch) singly or in pairs, often with slimy sap oozing out from cut parts. The gum is also described as a clear, gummy sap, resembling gum arabic, which exudes from wounded branches and hangs down in long strands, becoming gradually solid. It is sweet at first taste and then irritating to the throat
The leaf is trifoliate, alternate, each leaflet 5–14 cm (2–5+1⁄2 in) x 2–6 cm (3⁄4–2+1⁄4 in), ovate with tapering or pointed tip and rounded base, untoothed or with shallow rounded teeth. Young leaves are pale green or pinkish, finely hairy while mature leaves are dark green and completely smooth. Each leaf has 4–12 pairs of side veins which are joined at the margin
The flowers are 1.5 to 2 cm, pale green or yellowish, sweetly scented, bisexual, in short drooping unbranched clusters at the end of twigs and leaf axils. They usually appear with young leaves. The calyx is flat with 4(5) small teeth. The four or five petals of 6–8 millimetres (1⁄4–3⁄8 in) overlap in the bud. Many stamens have short filaments and pale brown, short style anthers. The ovary is bright green with an inconspicuous disc
The fruit typically has a diameter of between 5 and 10 cm (2 and 4 in). It is globose or slightly pear-shaped with a thick, hard rind and does not split upon ripening. The woody shell is smooth and green, gray until it is fully ripe when it turns yellow. Inside are 8 to 15 or 20 sections filled with aromatic orange pulp, each section with 6 (8) to 10 (15) flattened-oblong seeds each about 1 cm long, bearing woolly hairs and each enclosed in a sac of adhesive, transparent mucilage that solidifies on drying. The fruit takes about 11 months to ripen on the tree, reaching maturity in December. It can reach the size of a large grapefruit or pomelo, and some are even larger. The shell is so hard it must be cracked with a hammer or machete. The fibrous yellow pulp is very aromatic. It has been described as tasting of marmalade and smelling of roses. Boning (2006) indicates that the flavor is “sweet, aromatic and pleasant, although tangy and slightly astringent in some varieties. It resembles a marmalade made, in part, with citrus and, in part, with tamarind.” Numerous hairy seeds are encapsulated in a slimy mucilage

در ایران بخاطر عدم شناخت کافی اکثرا با سیب چوبی اشتباه گرفته می شود ولی این دو گیاه کاملا متفاوت هستند
بائل بسیار کمیاب است و در جنوب شرق آسیا رشد میکند بافت میوه کمی سفت است و دانه ها در پوششی پنبه مانند احاطه شده اند
پوسته میوه چوبی است. گوشت میوه کمی سفت و معطر و خوشبو است و بویی شبیه بوی گلاب دارد و طعم آن ترکیبی از مارمالاد و پرتقال و تمر هندی و خوشمزه است
سفتی گوشت میوه در حد سفتی خربزه است و می توان آن را جوید
میوه بائل همچنین با نام‌های سیب بنگالی، سیب طلایی نیز شناخته می‌شود. این میوه بومی هند و جنوب شرقی آسیا است و به صورت طبیعی در سریلانکا، تایلند و مالزی رشد میکند و در هند به عنوان یک درخت مقدس شناخته می‌شود. درخت بائل معمولا اندازه کوچک یا متوسطی دارد ولی می‌تواند به ارتفاع 13 متر هم رشد کند. این درخت دارای شاخه‌های بلند و باریک است که به سمت پایین خم شده‌اند. قطر میوه بائل معمولا 5 تا 12 سانتی‌متر است. میوه گرد یا کمی گلابی شکل بوده و دارای پوست محکمی می‌باشد و پوست میوه بعد از رسیدن ترک نمی‌خورد. پوست میوه صاف و به رنگ سبز است و بعد از رسیدن رنگ آن زرد می‌شود. میوه‌ها حدودا 11 ماه طول می‌کشد تا رسیده شوند و می‌توانند به اندازه یک گریپ فروت بزرگ یا حتی بزرگ‌تر برسند. پالپ درون میوه بسیار معطر است و طعم آن شبیه مربای نارنج می‌باشد و بوی آن شبیه بوی گل رز است. این میوه عطر و طعم شیرینی دارد و طعم آن ترکیبی از طعم مرکبات و تمشک است. میوه بائل به صورت تازه، خشک شده و یا به صورت نوشیدنی مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. این میوه در بهبود اختلالات گوارشی، زخم، سردرد، فشار خون بالا، دیابت و بسیاری از بیماری های دیگر به کار می‌رود و درمان کننده اسهال است، همچنین ریشه، پوست، برگ و گل‌های درخت نیز دارای ارزش دارویی هستند. این گیاه رشد آسانی دارد و در مناطقی که دمای هوا در زمستان زیر 7- درجه سانتی‌گراد نباشد قابل کاشت است.
